Slash those gas costs
Slash those gas costs
Gas cost-efficiency and trimming gas consumption is critical to us all in current times. Ever increasing energy costs make it critical to get the most out of your gas heating and gas heating system. Your gas boiler may be accounting for up to one half of your total gas consumption. If you want to trim your energy costs read on as we have outlined some actions you can take.
switch off gas central heating in areas where you do not need it :
You can easily turn off central heating system radiators for a period, so switch them off in any rooms that are not going to be used for a while such as a spare bedchamber. Trimming the number of rooms which are actively heated will reduce your gas use. Seal the room off by shutting the entrance door and you will have in effect contracted your home and shrunk your heating expenses.
Use the central heating to heat your home rather than other appliances :
If the boiler is on using it to heat one incremental room consumes only a little extra energy. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the flue, modern central heating systems are much more efficient in heating your home than using an electric fire.
Cut down on draughts by use insulation
Draughts bring chilled air into your home wasting energy you have already paid for. Use draft excluders or door brushes where they can be fitted. You can get foam sealants which will rapidly close any air cracks that have developed between your entrance door or window frames and the wall. If you live in an older home you might be astounded how often these cracks occur. drafts can be hunted down by using a candle flame and checking when it flutters as you move around the room taking care not to spill any hot wax.
Put on more closing rather than turning up the heating :
Putting on extra clothes or just being active for a while will mean that you get warmer without turning up the heating thermostat. Surprisingly, a 1° reduction in the room thermostat can result in a tenpercent decrease in your energy consumption.
Your curtains can help to control temperature :
When the sun shines in the wintertime make sure that it can heat your house like keeping the curtains open. Outside temperatures drop at nightime and your home can lose a lot of heat through the windows. Closing a set of heavy drapes can trim this heat loss, this approach will help to save you a lot of money over many months. Thick drapes are better at preventing heat loss than thin ones.
advice around the home :
Check your gas boiler and whether it has a hot water cylinder as this should be insulated. Do not pay to heat water and then let it cool down throughout the day.
Radiators warm the wall behind them and this heat loss can be reduced if you put silver foil behind the radiators.
