Prepare for the winter and enhance your gas heating system

As the cold winter approaches the nights get longer and the coldness creeps in, so we must all be prepared, and the best way to do this is via a central heating system. There’s nothing cosier than a warm room while a blizzard rages outside, and this warmth is best provided by a sturdy and efficient central heating system.

The typical central heating system has copper pipework, radiators and a gas heating boiler and it is basically of two types, vented or a pumped system.

The most commonly used gas central heating systems are the pumped systems, which consists of two prominent parts, a feed and expansion tank; the tank is the core of the system, it first heats itself and then transfers the heat to the heaters through the pipes. The tank has enough space to allow for any water expansion that might result from the heating system.

The vented system on the other hand is a sealed system where there is no core heating. Since it is totally sealed, the feed-expansion tanks are not required. A sealed central heating system removes the risk of water leakage, airlock formation and pipe freeze (a common problem in the harsh winters of countries like Russia).

Tell me why I should get gas central heating?.

Well the main benefit of having gas central heating is that it has the ability to warm up the whole house or office at very fasts speeds, and without affecting the air around you. Gas fires, electric heaters and storage heaters were more commonly used in the past. But the main drawbacks with these, were that they made the air somewhat dry and hard, as well as letting off a slight odour.

Gas central heating ended such problems, however your central heating system should be checked and maintained regularly in order to ensure it is running at its optimum. Spring and summer often sees these systems shut down and completely ignored, only to be abruptly switched on when a chilly wind blows in. Instead, you should start using the central heating system during the autumn season so that if any problem comes to the fore, you can call the engineer and get it rectified before the wintertime.

You should also keep in mind that most households central heating systems can let air or dirt into it, therefore they need yearly draining. To flush the system, open the valve carefully and drain the collected water into a bucket, while ensuring that no further water gets into the heating system.
